The less said about Thursday morning the better. Sitting in a Worldcon business session for 3 hours is not everyone's idea of a good time. Not that I didn't like it, it's just that it can appear rather pointless and boring from a non-fan's perspective. Even other fans look at you like you've suddenly become very ill and lost your way. But I thought it important to be there in case I needed to wave the Australian flag, and there was one particular thing I wanted to see get enacted, unamended. It was and I was able to leave happy.
That long, long session was followed by presentations and Q&As with the sitting worldcon (2018) and committees bidding for future conventions - 2019 to 2025. The interesting ones coming up for me were Dublin in 2019, NZ in 2020 and France in 2024. The others are all worthy and I hope they do well, but these three are on our future travel plans.
By the time this session was over I was due a beer. But only one as I had to get back to the hotel and pick up Robyn in time to make a dinner appointment with Henry Balen and Renee Sieber at 6:30pm.
Renee is someone I met at Aussiecon 2 way back in 1985. She and her travelling companions came and stayed with me in Canberra after that convention and I've remained friends with her ever since. The fact that she and Henry now live in Montreal means that I've probably only seen her ten times in over 30 years. But such is the nature of these friendships that it hardly seems to matter.
After dinner it was back to the convention center and a quick visit to Lucy Huntzinger's birthday party (first met in Melbourne in 1987 where she spent 2 weeks, on and off, sleeping in my spare room), and the Dublin bid party before heading home for a well-earned rest.
